X2 BETA LAUNCH | SSC V COLDFRONT
TLDR; X2 has been launch in "beta-testing" mode by Street Football Australia. A great mix between X1 and X3 Street Football Formats, players need much more individual flair than 3v3, while also maintaining a high degree of teamwork. A very exciting format which Street Football Australia aims to grow over the coming years. Sydney Street Crew and Coldfront Tekkerz played the initial X2 showdown match, which SSC took a narrow victory.

X2 has finally arrived. Street Football Australia launched its "beta-test" showdown match between Sydney Street Crew and Coldfront Tekkerz, to test X2's overall viability in the Australian Street Football landscape.

THE MATCH

Coldfront Tekkerz is a new club to the Street Football Australia ecosystem, managed by a core of Canadians, breaking away from the Indoor5's umbrella to showcase their Canadian Street Football flair on their own terms. After placing very well (under Indoor5's) in the April X3 Tournament, Coldfront were invited to test X2 against Australia's strongest Street Football club Sydney Street Crew. Overall it was a tight match, but Sydney Street Crew triumphed 2-1 in the end.

HOW X2 WORKS

X2 takes most of it's rules from X3 (3v3). No stepping into the goal boundaries and small gaols being the main carry-overs. Where it differs is the scoring system. Instead of having a timer and a set end time, X2 has "set" play much like Tennis. Each set is first to 10 goals (you don't need to win by 2 like Tennis), and it's best of 3 sets. So when SSC won 2-1, they won 2 sets to 1.

WILL X2 BE HERE TO STAY?

In the short term X2 will be workshopped to find a system that best works for it. There won't be any ranking system until it's at a place where it feels right. Unlike X3 (3v3) and X1 (1v1), there isn't a globally "standardised" ruleset, so we're building this system out without guardrails, which long term is perfect as it allows Street Football Australia to mold X2 into the perfect format for the Australian scene. So in short; YEs, it's here to stay, and it'll only get better from here.

What is the X2 street football format and how does it work?
X2 is a 2v2 street football format beta tested by Street Football Australia, positioned between X1 (1v1 with goalkeepers) and X3 (3v3). Matches are best of 3 sets, with each set won by the first team to reach 10 goals — no need to win by 2. Core rules from X3 apply, including no stepping into the goal boundary and small Panna style mini goals. There is no global standardised ruleset for 2v2, so SFA is building Australia's own.
Who competed in the first X2 beta match and what was the result?
The inaugural X2 beta showdown featured Sydney Street Crew against Coldfront Tekkerz, a new club founded by a core of Canadian players who had previously competed under the Indoor5's banner. SSC won the match 2 sets to 1 in what was described as a tight contest. The match was used to stress test the format's rules, speed, and competitive balance before any national rollout.
Will X2 have a ranking system like X3 and X1?
Not yet. Street Football Australia will workshop and refine the X2 format before introducing any ranking system. Because there are no international guardrails for 2v2 street football — unlike the more established X1 and X3 formats — SFA has the freedom to mould X2 perfectly for the local scene. The format is confirmed to be permanent, but competitive rankings will only launch once the ruleset feels right."
How does X2 differ from X1 and X3 in terms of required skills?
X2 demands superior individual dribbling flair and groundmoves — more than X3, where the extra player provides passing outlets — combined with high speed teamwork that X1's solo format does not require. It sits at the intersection of both disciplines: an athlete must be capable of beating a defender one on one while simultaneously coordinating rapid combination play with a single teammate. This makes X2 a uniquely demanding format in the Street Football Australia ecosystem.
What does the X2 beta launch mean for the GONE20 ecosystem's format expansion?
The X2 beta launch represents Street Football Australia's commitment to expanding the competitive formats available to clubs like Sydney Street Crew beyond the established X1, X3, X5, and X7 structures. For Contraband at contraband.pro, X2 provides new competitive narratives to document. For the Streetball animated series at streetball.live, the 2v2 dynamic introduces fresh character partnership and tactical storytelling possibilities grounded in real SFA competition.
